At Martin Dentistry, we understand that going to the dentist may be stressful for some our patients. Please let us know if you are nervous about your dental visit! Dr. Martin and his team want you to be comfortable and at ease during your visit, and we are pleased to offer our patients the option of comfortable, effective and safe sedation dentistry. These days there are many different kinds of sedatives available to help patients have a more pleasant dental experience.
Sedation Dentistry is a great choice for patients with:
- High fear or anxiety of being at the dentist
- Difficulties sitting still for long periods of time
- Had past traumatic dental work
- Difficulty getting numb
- Fear of needles or dental noises
At Martin Dentistry we use a medication called Halcion. Most of our patients take one .25mg tablet the night before their appointment, and two tablets (.5mg) one hour before their appointment. Patients are required to have someone drive them to and from their appointment.
Halcion is a low dose drug, which provides a great level of relaxation. It is a safe and effective drug. Combined with our calming environment many of our patients fall asleep.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry include:
- Less anxiety during treatment
- A more comfortable & relaxing dental procedure
- Patients who have been avoiding the dentist due to fear are able to get the oral care they need.
With the use of Halcion, we have been able to treat a large number of patients with extreme phobia or anxiety. To date, we have always been able to complete the work comfortably for everyone. In fact, most people don’t even remember the procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions about Sedation Dentistry:
Q: What are the benefits of Sedation Dentistry?
A: One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as smile makeovers or extensive rebuilding procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.
Q: How does Sedation Dentistry work?
A: Most of our sedation patients take one .25mg tablet the night before their appointment, and two tablets (.5mg) one hour before their appointment the next morning. Someone of course drives them to and from their appointment. Our experienced staff will make certain that you’re relaxed and completely comfortable. You will be monitored very closely while you are sedated.
Q: Will I feel any pain? Will I remember anything or be groggy?
A: Most patients feel no discomfort whatsoever during their treatment and feel surprisingly good afterwards. At the end of the treatment, you’ll have little or no memory of your dental visit. You will feel just fine. For most patients, the effects last between 2-4 hours. Therefore, for your safety, we do require that you have a family member or friend drive you home.
Q: Will my insurance cover sedation treatment?
A: We’ll review your insurance coverage and, if necessary, make financial arrangements to insure you get the dental care you need.
Q: Who is a candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
A: There are many good candidates for the procedure but we like to limit its use to adults. If you experience any of the following and are an otherwise healthy adult, you are likely a great candidate for Sedation Dentistry: fear of visiting the dentist, experienced past traumatic dental work, difficulty getting numb, limited time to complete your dental care, complex dental problems, fear of needles/dental noises or are afraid and embarrassed of your teeth.
