DENTAL CROWNS

RESTORING AND REPAIRING TEETH IN YORKTOWN, VA

WHAT ARE DENTAL CROWNS?

Dental crowns are a common restorative dental procedure designed to repair a tooth or teeth that have been damaged, cracked or severely decayed. Crowns are natural-looking and made to match the shade of your adjacent teeth. Crowns cover the entire visible surface of a tooth. A dental crown helps to preserve the function of damaged teeth, repair a cracked tooth, or restore the function of a tooth with excessive decay.

DENTAL CROWN USES:

  • Replace a tooth that has had a large filling
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Attach a bridge
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover discolored or misshaped tooth
  • Cover a tooth that has had a root canal treatment

Thanks to advancements in dental technology, crowns look more natural and don’t form those tell-tale gray lines at your gum line. Today’s all-ceramic crowns are metal-free, very strong, and natural-looking. Unlike veneers, they have the ability to cover very dark internal tooth structures.

THE PROCESS OF APPLYING DENTAL CROWNS

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR DENTAL VISIT

A dental crown usually takes two appointments to complete. The first appointment will consist of preparing the tooth for the crown. Under a local anesthetic, your dentist will remove a small amount of the outer surface of your tooth to make a smooth, uniform base on which to place the crown. Once the tooth is prepared, an impression will be made so that the lab can create a tooth that will fit precisely with the adjacent and interfacing teeth. You will receive a temporary crown when the appointment is complete that will be lightly bonded to your tooth to protect it while the crown is being fabricated.

At the next appointment, your dentist will remove the temporary crown and bond your new crown to the tooth and make small adjustments as needed for a perfect fit. To learn more about restorative dental procedures, call Anthony Martin Dentistry today to schedule your appointment at (757) 886-0300.
